Cold weather to continue: NWS

PORT Moresby and the Southern and Highlands regions can expect cloudy conditions with little rainfall in the week ahead, the National Weather Service (NWS) says.
“Residents around these areas will experience cloudy days with light rainfall,” NWS assistant director Jimmy Gomoga said.
The weather office has predicted rain to continue in the Mamose and New Guinea Islands.
Gomoga said the sea surface temperature was warmer than normal which was resulting in continuous rain that has been experienced throughout this dry season.
“More rain is expected to continue due to the warmer sea temperatures which will go into the seasonal transition in Sept into the wet season.”
Mamose and the New Guinea Islands are advised to look out for flood warnings.
Strong winds will continue in most southern parts of the country and throughout the Vitiaz Strait.
“The cold weather experienced at the moment is because it’s winter in Australia and is at its peak so the winds are much cooler,” Gamoga said.
He said winds will pick up and is likely to continue into next week.
People along the coastal areas should take extra care when going out to sea, he added.
