QPR Colts claimed K20,000 and the National Capital District Governor’s Cup after they beat Southside Brothers 14-2 at Sir John Guise Stadium yesterday.
Last season’s runners-up Colts put on a strong defensive effort despite not having enough possession as compared with the opposition and losing three players to the sin bin.
After two disallowed tries, Colts scored their first try under the uprights in the 21st minute through lock and Port Moresby Viper Julius Yakopa who chased down his half Peter Pakali’s kick.
The try was converted by Paul Tape as they led 6-0.
Brothers had more opportunities in the first half but couldn’t convert them into points due to errors.
Colts came back stronger in the second half.
But dangerous play saw Graham Terry (46th minute) and Ben Wemin (50th minute) sent out for ten minutes in the sin bin, which saw them down to 11 men.
Brothers had repeat sets in Colts’ red zone but poor attacking options by halves Stanley Kilian and Japheth Negi allowed Colts to scramble in defence.
Brothers only managed to kick a penalty goal in the 60th minute to trail 2-6.
The team from Moresby South still had opportunities 15 minutes from fulltime when Colts’ Philip Olmi was sin binned but they still couldn’t score points.
Colts put the game beyond doubt in the final eight minutes when centre Hobert Paul Sine and winger Brendon Begam scored an unconverted try each on the left edge to secure the win.
Colts coach Gordon Bal gave credit to his experienced players who guided the young side to victory.
“I commend senior players like Julius Yakopa, Ben Wemin and others who led the young boys well throughout the tournament,” he said.
