Commanders warned not to entertain police transfers

MOROBE police chief Supt Augustine Wampe has warned his station commanders not to entertain any transfer from other centres but refer them to his office first.
Wampe issued the warning after a wanted criminal and escapee from the Kerevat Prison in East New Britain (ENB) conned police in Finschhafen that he was an officer transferred from West Sepik and had joined them. Adam Peter, from Inge village in Maprik, East Sepik, was on the run for nine years after escaping from custody.
He had verbally convinced the Finschhafen commander at Gagidu that he was officer Brian Molu and had join them since Oct last year.
Peter was eventually identified and arrested last month when a visiting police team from ENB arrived in Finschhafen to bury a colleague.
“All police transfers into and out of the province must follow proper procedures and processes,” Wampe said.
“The police officer transferred must have proper transfer documents from his last provincial police commander which they must present to me (Morobe PPC) or the Met Supt (Lae Metro Command).
“Any other arrangement outside this is illegal.”
Wampe said the mistake of blindly allowing people to join police in the province without proper documentation should not happen again. He said Peter was arrested for impersonating a police officer and detained at the Buimo jail.
