Council presidents illegally in office to be dealt with

ALL council presidents who contested last year’s general election are illegally in office and will be dealt with, Inter-Government Relations Minister Kevin Isifu says.
Isifu told Parliament yesterday that it was made clear to them before the elections that those who wished to contest would have to resign from their post.
“Some adhered while others didn’t,” he said.
“Even those who did not formally resign, it is by law that once you leave the office to contest in the elections, you have forfeited your position and the deputy president automatically becomes the president.
“But, sadly, there are many who have retained their positions and there are some governments that are supporting this.
“Some have taken out court orders to stop their removal from office.”
Isifu said his legal team was working on it and those illegally in office would be dealt with.
He said that he was planning on reviewing some laws to ensure that this did not happen in future.
“We have to set a precedence and stop this practice,” Isifu said.
