THE National Capital District Commission launched a Yoga programme for athletes with more than 25 participants from the Fairfax Volleyball Association undergoing training yesterday.
The programme, in partnership with the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee and the PNG Sports Foundation, was launched at the Koki South Side Fitness Centre.
Commission sports manager Kila Dick explained the value of Yoga being incorporated into athletes’ way of thinking and training.
“In sports, athletes perform and compete with opponents, these values help you to rise up to the occasion and enhance self-worth and individual behaviour,” he said.
“It will also improve your concentration and these values will take you to another level.”
He said besides Yoga, athletes would be taught about the importance of non-violence, contentment, discipline, self-study, truthfulness, moderation, no stealing, no greed, cleanliness, self-surrender and “doing everything for the greater good”.
PNG Kumul and SP Hunter Stagroth Amean attributed his success in rugby league to the commission’s active city development programme.
“I have been taking part in the programme and I am a living testimony of the initiative,” he said.
“My fans like me because I practise the values of non-violence, discipline and self-study on the field.”
