MEMBERS of a community in Morobe gave a pig, K500 and fresh farm food to police after an officer was attacked by drunk men a fortnight ago.
Police Inspector Saking Boki said such attacks by civilians against policemen was a threat to law and order and peace.
“Police are mandated to protect lives and properties at all cost,” he said.
“With a huge landmass and 33 LLGs in Morobe, our officers lack logistics in mobility and manpower to enforce law and order, thus we need community partnership in policing.”
The officer based with the Morobe rural patrol unit was attacked at the Nadzab market on Oct 30 while trying to stop drunkards misbehaving.
One of them later posted a video footage of the attack.
Police later arrested five men with the help of the community leaders at Gabsongkeg. Four are expected to appear in court on Friday. The one who posted the video footage on social media is still in police custody.
Wampar LLG president Boaras Giuka said that increase in law and order issues in Nadzab area was hindering progress and development.
“Landowners leasing lands to settlers failed miserably to provide settlement policies and guidelines for block holders to abide by and live peacefully,” Giuka said.
