Community thanks women for water supply funding initiative

Highlands

A COMMUNITY in Mt Hagen is thankful to two women who took the initiative to arrange for the funding of a water supply project for them.
After watching the people struggle daily to find water for more than 20 years, Regina Weri and Mary Kup from the Jika Malakamp clan, residing at Kim Pawa, outside Mt Hagen City wrote to Hagen MP William Duma requesting his help.
Water supply to more than 1000 people was disconnected by Water PNG two decade ago because of misuse.
Though three rivers – Kum, Rongen and Kim – flow nearby, they are polluted.
The people needed fresh water to drink and use for cooking.
Duma responded to the letter written by Weri and Kup and gave them K41,000 to pay Water PNG so that the water supply could be reconnected.
Last Sunday, Duma was there to open the water supply to Kim Pawa. The residents now have access to 37 water taps.
Clan leaders Patrick Weri, Malakai Weri, James Barclay and Francis Kulunga thanked the two women for what they had done.
“It was a hard life we faced. Water is life and I commended the two women for their effort,” Weri said.
Regina Weri, one of the two women, said as mothers, they were concerned about the families and contacted Duma.
“Duma was kind enough and gave us the cheque to pay Water PNG,” she said.
Duma thanked Weri and Kup for opening the eyes of women in the district.
“We need to work and do what we can to help ourselves,” He said.
“This is what these two women did.”
