Concern over remandees’ absence from court

WAIGANI Committal Court Magistrate Paul Nii yesterday raised concern that remandees have not been brought to court for prosecution in the last three weeks.
“Prosecution is one of the core functions of the police and the police should have arranged the necessary logistics to bring remandees to court for prosecution,” he said.
Magistrate Nii said this when he was informed that the remandees were not brought to court.
“Breakdown and shortage of vehicles to bring remandees from Bomana Prison to court are police administrative issues which I do not have any power over,” he said.
“But, I am concerned because the remandees are not brought to court.”
Magistrate Nii said if the vehicle was in maintenance as the police prosecutors said, it should be fixed by next week.
“If such practice continues into next week, the policemen in charge will be summoned to the court to explain the delays,” he said. The matter will return to court for submission on March 23.
