Assistant Commissioner of Police for New Guinea Islands Perou N’dranou says the PNG contingent to the Solomon Islands has achieved two of its three missions successfully.
“The first two missions were successfully accomplished,” he said.
“We managed to restore peace and confidence back to the Solomon Islands police with the help of eight other international coalition forces.
“Our mission there was to restore peace and security to the residents, businesses and the government of the Solomon Islands.”
N’dranou said they did not achieve their third mission because of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
“We could not establish dialogue to create peace among the conflicting communities due to the Covid-19,” he said.
Despite this, N’dranou said peace had been restored and there were no more fighting and looting.
“Police will carry out a dialogue and mediation only if the fighting continues,” he said.
N’dranou said there were 37 members in the PNG contingent that were deployed to the Solomon Islands.
“24 personnel were from the three different police units while the other 13 members were from the Correctional Services (CS),” he said.
N’dranou said the 13 CS officers were gazetted by Police Commissioner David Manning as special police to assist with the operations.
“The CS officers were gazetted as special constables while assisting the PNG police to provide security during the riots in the Solomon Islands.”
He said all the 37 members were awarded a medal by the Solomon Islands government for restoring peace and bringing back confidence to the people.
“The medals will be officially presented to the PNG contingent by Prime Minister James Marape and Commissioner Manning later this month.”
