Concerns at border

NORTH Fly police commander Chief Insp Silva Sika is concerned about how traditional border crossers from Australia and Indonesia could potentially bring in the coronavirus.
He said the Western government should take measures to prevent this from happening.
Sika said Western, unlike West Sepik, did not have any proper facilities in place for police, Customs, immigrations and health officers to set up posts to check people who were travelling to and coming from Australia and Indonesia.
He said the border was wide open and people were crossing freely and unchecked every day.
“The national agencies must now step in and identify and establish an area where people who are travelling in and out through the boarder must be medically checked before coming into the country,” he said. “We are not doing enough awareness on the spread of the coronavirus like West Sepik because of manpower and logistics issues.”
Chief Insp Sika said there had not been any awareness from the health experts to the people in the districts.
He said early preparation was better than the last minute ones done after people were infected.
Chief Insp Sika said people living along the border had not been advised and there were no checks in place and they were crossing borders.
