A LOCAL road contractor has signed a K3 million deal with the New Ireland government yesterday.
The signing between Tasukolak Ltd and the provincial government took place during the provincial executive council meeting in the presence of Governor Sir Julius Chan, administrator Lamiller Pawut, provincial Works manager Solomon Pela and PEC members.
Under the contract, the company will be upgrading the Muliama to Bakok road on the East Coast, with the initial grubbing work to be done by Santawan long term logging company.
The contract is for 6 months with works to commence on May 20.
Tasukolak Ltd chairman Amos Daniel thanked the provincial government, through the leadership of Governor Sir Julius, for having confidence in the locally-run company.
“It’s important that New Irelanders contributes to building New Ireland. We cannot just be mere spectators. We will ensure we deliver to expectation,” Daniel said.
The company is able to venture into road works after it successfully purchased machinery from the money it made from selling off its shares in the run-down Malagan resort.
Tasukolak Ltd also specialises in round log exports, downstream timber sales, nursery of cocoa, Robusta coffee, reforestation and a Fisheries project.
Sir Julius called on the company to prove itself.
“My Government prefers to give work to local contractors but in the past, local companies were given numerous opportunities to partner with the government, however they did not live up to expectation,” he said.
“We cannot play around with public money.
You have been given a grand opportunity and my Government will go to those who are prepared to work.”
