Cop guilty of double-murder

THE prosecution submitted in the National Court in Waigani on Friday that a policeman, charged with the double-murder on Garden Hills in Port Moresby two years ago, is guilty.
State lawyer Lilly Jack said Komeng Gubag, 34, from Sumkar’s Wakon village, was guilty as charged because he was seen at the crime scene and there was evidence that two men were killed.
“There are sufficient evidence as per their witnesses to support the charges and to find Gubag guilty,” she said at the submission on verdict before Judge Teresa Berrigan.
Gubag’s lawyer David Dotaona opposed, saying he should not be found guilty because the witnesses were unreliable.
“There were other policemen and security guards present at the scene and several shots were fired at that time,” he said.
“The victims could have been shot with one of those gun shots,” he said, adding that the witnesses’ statements were inconsistent to support the allegations.
The trial in Gubag’s case ended last week with seven witnesses from State and only himself as a defence witness.
It was alleged that there was a commotion on Garden Hills about 6pm on Oct 23, 2021, and Gubag was seen there armed with a firearm.
Police alleged that several gun shots were fired and as a result, two men were wounded and died.
Judge Berrigan reserved her decision on verdict and said the parties would advised on a date.
Meanwhile, Gubag was further remanded in Bomana Prison.
