NATIONAL Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika says that the policeman who was attacked and seriously injured last week allegedly by a rowdy mob at the Gordon market area is still in a critical condition at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Sika said the policeman had driven a vehicle into a crowded area at Gordon after suffering an epileptic seizure which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
The vehicle swerved off the road, allegedly hitting and killing an individual which caused bystanders to turn on the lone policeman.
Sika said the policeman was rushed to the Port Moresby General Hospital while over 20 suspects were arrested and detained at the Gordon Police Station for questioning.
Sika said the matter was referred to the criminal investigation unit at Boroko Police Station and they will re-visit the crime scene to begin their probe.
]The Met Supt said the investigators would look into the alleged death and they would also work on identifying the suspects involved in the assault of the policeman.
Meanwhile, the Gordon area is now less congested with people after police swept through the place and forced many vagrants who loiter there out of the area on Friday.
Sika said it was a relief and hoped that the National Capital District Commission could seize the opportunity to enforce municipal laws to control public bus activities and restrict people from loitering and selling goods and garden produce outside the Gordon market.
Sika said the city was densely populated because of the influx of people who were constantly moving in to settle.
He said unemployment was high, and people were resorting to all forms of dubious activities to survive, and Gordon was a testament to this reality.
