Cop: Traffic offences rising

National

THE number of traffic offences in the National Capital District (NCD) is rising and this is a concern for a growing city, a senior police officer says.
“Statistics from the traffic police have indicated that there is an increase in the traffic offenders and they need to be arrested and charged,” NCD Met Supt Gideon Ikumu said.
He said most of traffic offences were unlicensed drivers and unregistered vehicles.
Supt Ikumu said many taxi drivers and PMV (public motor vehicle) drivers seemed to be driving around without licenses and in unregistered vehicles while public servants were genuine when rushing to work and forgetting their licences.
He said there were no major traffic accidents over the New Year period other than incidents such as those caught driving while drunk who were cautioned and sent on their way home.
Supt Ikumu said traffic offences were occurring almost daily and relevant agencies needed to penalise and sanction these law breakers.
“With the increased number of traffic offenders, the penalties for traffic offences should be made tough in order to cut down on the incidents,” he said.
