POLICE have arrested a man for a murder in the Gegerobi Compound in Lae on Saturday, Lae metropolitan commander Chief Supt Chris Kunyanban says.
“The murder was alcohol-related,” he said. “The suspect and the victim were drinking alcohol when they got into an argument.
“The suspect strangled the victim and then hit him on the back of his neck with a blunt object.”
The victim fell unconscious and police arrived and called for an ambulance to send the victim to Angau Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In another New Year’s incident, a policeman and a security guard were injured after residents from a nearby settlement in Bumbu resisted arrest for suspects involved in a burglary.
“Security guards manning a company premises was confronted by youths from the nearby settlement when police were called in to assist,” he said.
“When police intervened, some police vehicles were stoned and shot at by youths using homemade guns.
“Reinforcement was called in and the situation was brought under control. A policeman was injured in the encounter after he was slashed on the face with a bush knife. He is recovering and in stable condition.”
At a festive crime-prevention roadblock, Chief Supt Kunyanban said police seized alcohol from several vehicles during New Year’s eve.
“When police asked them where they bought the alcohol, they pointed to a particular club and we arrested the owner who was fined and released on K5,000 bail,” he said. “Police also removed all alcohol in the club.
“The fine should be a deterrent to others to do business strictly in compliance with the Liquor Licensing Act.”
