POLICE in Port Moresby have divided the city into three zones to focus more attention on public safety.
Each zone will be under the command of a senior police officer, according to zone three commander Chief Inspector Tapp Opai.
The zone has 56 police officers based at Gordon, Airport, 6-Mile and Saraga. It aims to reduce criminal activities in the city.
“Activities this year include community awareness and making sure all bus stops, markets and shops have police presence to make sure everyone is safe to move around,” he said.
Police will make sure the public especially students and workers can safely travel on buses, go to shops and market.
Zone commanders would conduct monthly parades at the stations around the city.
Zone two covers Boroko, Waigani and Gerehu. Zone one covers Port Moresby, Badili and Hohola.
Opai told the officers to closely monitor activities around the Erima Flyover Bridge, surrounding settlements, Wild Life, Gordon bus stop, and 6-Mile because of petty crimes, armed robbery and burglary.
“Communities living in those areas have caused a lot of problem and we will deal with them.”
