RTA needs one system to address fake licences

ROAD Transport Authority (RTA) needs a centralised system in place before it can address issues concerning fake licences, chief executive Nelson Terema says.
Terema yesterday said a proposal to have the centralised system in place was before the Central Supply and Tenders Board (CSTB) since 2017.
He said the project was yet to be approved by the CSTB.
“The authority needed the centralised system for vehicle registration and issuing of licences and other integrated services,” Terema said. “A security chip is to be included in the licence.
“RTA is now looking at setting up a system which we don’t have at the moment.
“We have met all the requirements and put that on tender in 2017, a Malaysia company was recommended to be in-charge of the project under a public-private partnership arrangement.
“After five years, the project will be transferred to PNG and having trained locals to be in-charge of the system. Police and other relevant authorities will then be able to have direct information.
“We can’t address the issue of fake licences if we don’t have a centralised system which hooks up all centres or provinces.
“Right now RTA does not know who has licence.
“No monitoring on our roads.
“Government is also losing money. This project is important.”
