EAST SEPIK police have thrown their support behind women and girls protesting against violence, saying they will not hesitate to be harsh on those abusing women’s rights.

Provincial police commander chief Supt Joe Poma said women were sick and tired of verbal, physical and sexual abuses by senseless people and everyone should rise up to support them in pinning down all forms of violence against “our mothers and sisters”.

Poma, who was a guest speaker at a forum organised by Sepik women during the haus krai there on Tuesday, said police realised the pain and suffering women went through and would give them the support and protection they deserved to feel safe.

“I am happy because our district courts are now jailing people causing violence while under the influence of steam and marijuana,” he said.

“The shift from a court fine to imposing a jail term is going in the right direction and police will make sure that those causing problems to women and girls are prosecuted.

“Parents should not fight at home because kids will follow when they grow up. We must not teach our children to settle disagreements with violence.

“Everyone must change their attitude and go to church so that we can learn to love each other and tolerate other people.

Poma also called on youths to refrain from consuming home brewed liquor and marijuana because were they among causes of violence and crime.
