Cops reject bribe

POLICE in Southern Highlands have again rejected an offer of bribery after confiscating 50 cartons of beer on a PMV bus from Mt Hagen last Saturday.
“The policemen were offered a K1,000 bribe not to seize the smuggled beer,” commander Chief Supt Martin Lakari.
“This is the second time policemen here have rejected bribes.
“The first was K100,000 offered by a doctor who was charged with allegedly killing his wife (Imelda Tubi Tiamanda) early this month.”
Chief Supt Lakari commended his highway patrol 17 policemen from Kaupena for conducting real police enforcement and setting good examples for the police force.
He said the beer were smuggled by two men on the bus that was stopped at a police road block in Walume at 9pm last Saturday.
“The duo were arrested on the spot when they offered the policemen K1,000,” he said.
Chief Supt Lakari said the suspects, both from Imbonggu, would be charged in the Ialibu District Court with two counts of bribery and alcohol smuggling into the province.
“The rejection of bribes by policemen is like reviving an old system in the constabulary that had deteriorated over time,” he said.
“What the policemen have done is something I am very proud of because they promote honesty and professionalism.
“I do not think there are many who could refuse bribes of K100,000 or K1,000.”
Chief Supt Lakari said police was the law enforcer of the Government and policem officers had to take the oath on the Bible to uphold their constitutional duties.
“We need more of such honest and dedicated policemen to serve in the constabulary,” Supt Lakari said.
