POLICE in Northern have foiled a heist that saw a shootout between cops and robbers in Ijivitari’s Yuwayu village on April 9.
“No one was injured but the armed robbers escaped,” Northern commander acting Supt Daniel Yangen said.
“Nevertheless, we prevented losses.”
He told The National that police were tipped of the robbery, rushed to the scene and heard gun shots coming from a Chinese store.
“The robbers had held up a local woman who is married to the Chinese shop owner.
“Police fired two warning shots.
“The robbers, armed with high powered guns, started firing at the policemen who returned fire.”
Acting Supt Yangen said it was the third robbery and attempted robbery that the police had to attend to this year.
“I am new to the province and I want community leaders to work with me to fight crime.
“Northern is a maritime province and police need a boat to attend to complaints outside the town.
“At the moment, we do not have boats to help us tackle piracy and other criminal activities.”
