SEVEN policemen allegedly caught drinking in uniform after their picture was posted on The Papua New Guinea Police Brutality and Crime–Stop campaign Facebook page have been suspended and charged with disgraceful conduct.
South Fly commander Brian Kombe told The National that the seven were suspended and their charges were being processed.
Kombe said there was nothing wrong with drinking after working hours but they should have done so without being in uniform.
“When you go for training in Bomana, you are taught to not engage in any disgraceful conduct that may tarnish the name of the constabulary,” Kombe said.
“It is for that reason that we have suspended them.”
The picture went viral on Facebook.
It was shared more than 165 times and seen by many users nationwide in late March.
Police commissioner Gari Baki at that time said that officers drinking in uniform was an embarrassment to the constabulary.
Baki told The National in an earlier interview that it was wrong and even embarrassing that the officers had taken a picture of themselves and posted it on Facebook.
Police Minister Jelta Wong was also appalled at seeing the picture and ordered directions for an investigation and the officers be identified and disciplined.
