THREE inmates from Bomana prison made a break for freedom in the middle of a traffic line-up at 9-Mile in Port Moresby but one wasn’t so lucky.
Two escaped but one was captured at the scene after they removed a lock in a vehicle transporting them from the Waigani Court House on Tuesday, police said.
National Capital District Metropolitan Supt Perou N’dranou said the inmates had gone to attend their court hearing.
Gabbson John, 21, from Chimbu, was apprehended while John Fabian, 35, from Sovero village in Morobe, and John Yomba, 28, from Chimbu, escaped and remain on the run.
“The prisoners were transported from the court house and they somehow got access to a tool. They managed to remove the lock of the door,” Perou N’dranou said.
He said on the way back to Bomona at the 9-Mile roundabout traffic had slowed down so the prisoners managed to jump out.
“Many other prisoners tried to escape but one good prisoner in the vehicle blocked the door, preventing them from jumping out and that was when a police unit arrived and they manage to apprehend one of them while the other two escaped,” N’dranou said.
He said many people stood and watched but did not help police to apprehend the escapees.
He said police were searching for the escapees.
Meanwhile, police also advised city residents in the National Capital District to call its new operation number 3249900.
