Country in emergency, needs decisive leaders

Letters

IN times of crises, we need decisive leaders.
Circumstances demand the kind of leadership.
For instance; the British parliament replaced conservative prime minister Neville Chamberlain with Winston Churchill just after WWII started.
Churchill immediately took control of the country’s situation and led Britain to victory.
In this war against the coronavirus pandemic, Papua New Guinea needs someone like Churchill.
A leadership change is eminent and necessary.
It cannot be denied that PNG is far worse than it was before Tari-Pori MP James Marape became prime minister.
We need courageous leaders who are meticulous in their dealings rather than those characterised with passivity or naivety, leaving loose ends everywhere.
Leaders who could have salvaged the situation and bailed our economy were Ialibu-Pangia MP Peter O’Neill and the late Sir Mekere Morauta.
Sir Mekere and O’Neill exuded a fighting spirit, an indomitable will and infinite courage because as businessmen, they knew how to take calculated risks and make investment decisions.
Marape lacks these important qualities and should face that reality.
He should address the economic regression with lawlessness across the country as a national emergency.
Marape could perhaps invite the Opposition over and establish a new cabinet.
Create a ministry to look after Covid-19 and put a reputable person such as Pomio MP Elias Kapavore in charge of it.
Create a separate ministry for economic recovery, solely to oversee the administration of economic stimulus packages and funds made available from loans.
Make no mistake, we are in an emergency.
