A COUPLE have been charged with obtaining a property by false pretense and mortgaging it to steal funds from a bank in New Ireland, National Fraud Anti-Corruption Director Chief Supt Matthew Damaru says.
Warinah Alomon, 32, from Tasingina village, Kavieng, New Ireland, and her partner Reinhardt Ernst Mangels, 63, from Osterbruch, Niedersachsen, Germany, were arrested and charged on June 16, 2020, with one count each of procuring execution of property in Kavieng by false pretence, and one count each of misappropriation of the said property belonging to Beabanum Ltd.
Damaru said yesterday the property was mortgaged by Beabanum Ltd against an overdraft facility of K50,000 with then PNG Banking Corporation (PNGBC).
The suspects owned a company called Emirau Products Ltd and were looking for property to rent. They asked the owners of Beabanum Ltd if they could rent the property and help pay off the mortgage.
Both parties agreed and through the lease payments made by Emirau Products Ltd, the mortgage on the property in question was discharged.
After the mortgage was discharged, the suspects without the knowledge of the owners of Beabanum Ltd, fraudulently transferred the property title to Emirau Products Ltd. Using the fraudulently obtained property title, the suspects mortgaged the property to Bank South Pacific (formerly PNGBC) which was discharged on Nov 26, 2013.
On Nov 26, 2013, the suspects mortgaged the property to the National Development Bank (NDB) and had mortgaged the property on several occasions to solicit funding from unsuspecting commercial banks.
Damaru said the couple were out on bail and would appear in Kavieng District Court this week for mention.
