Court summons police detective to explain bail issue

A POLICE detective is expected to appear in court today to explain why a Filipino woman, accused of acting illegally to get her son released from custody, was refused bail.
Det Roman Anton was summoned by Magistrate Tracy Ganaii to appear in the Waigani Committal Court yesterday to explain why Marilyn Espolong, from the Philippines, was denied bail, why was the arrest made on a weekend and who was the complainant.
But Police Prosecutor Chief Insp Polon Koniu told The National that Anton did not appear in court as expected because the summons was not served to him on Monday.
“We will have the summons ready today (Tuesday), and serve it on Det Anton to appear in court,” he said.
He said Anton was expected to appear in court today.
Espolong was arrested by Anton, charged at the Gerehu police station and later taken to Boroko last Saturday and attempts to bail her were rejected.
She is alleged to have conspired with Anna Wills, officer-in-charge of juvenile, to get her son released from police custody.
After releasing Espolong last Sunday, Ganaii fixed a hearing on Monday for Anton to explain why the accused was denied bail.
She noted that the warrant of arrest was issued four days earlier.
However, Anton failed to turn up in court on Monday morning.

  • It just goes to show how incompetent that detective Roman Anton is – not able to complete the relevant process in full to justify bail refusal. Because he failed he did a runner by not appearing in court so the police prosecutor can stand up for him in court – they both are no different. He is just defending the incompetence of that police detective making himself look bad in front of the magistrate. This happens everywhere in the country where police detectives fail to carry out proper investigations and duely complete the processes as specified by procedure and law. There is too many delays and deferrals primarity due to the incompetence of police detectives – I wonder how they were deemed competent in the first place to be police detectives and let them continue with their ineffective and underperformance and continue to call them detectives!!

  • Yes totally agreed with the above comment and therefore I assumed that he should be called Defective and not Didective.

  • the Defective must have received defuctional monies, and is unfuctional on his defective duties.

  • His superiors should discipline him for non performance and incompetency. His lot are the ones who drag this country backward.
