In honour of the traditional landowners of the city, Capital Rugby Union (CRU) will host the Hiri Cup in Port Moresby this weekend, with four teams doing battle.
The Lahara Yellows are made up of Harlequins and Valley Hunters players.
The Laurabada Reds are made up of Nova and Wanderers players.
The Avurigo Greens are made up of Brothers and Crusaders players, and the Mirgini Blues comprise Juggernauts and University personnel.
“The Avurigo Greens, with the table-topping Kramer Ausenco Brothers players are the team to beat and their combinations with the ever vibrant players from Crusaders will be a sight to watch in the first senior men’s match,” CRU competition manager Paul Joseph said.
“The main game should be a thriller, with the Mirigini Blues taking on Laurabada Reds.
“The Blues will comprise University players, with skipper Kenneth Vagi leading his charges.
“Nova and Wanderers should see their players step up. Former Pukpuk Cecil Davani will lead the Reds.”
The Hiri Cup was established in 2016 and was used to select provincial teams, the Boromas and Gaigais, for Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union-sanctioned tournaments or other tourneys organised by CRU with other provincial unions.
The teams were named after Hiri winds used by the Papuans, hence this is CRU’s way of recognising the local landowners and acknowledging their input in the game.
