THE Capital Rugby Union competition has changed its 2018 calendar to cater for any potential competition or match for Port Moresby’s two representative sides, the Boromas and Gaigais.
The CRU’s pre-season rugby 10s competition ends this weekend and will be followed by 15s pre-season from Feb 24-25 to March 17-18.
CRU competition manager Paul Joseph said: “After the three weekends of 10s we head into the pre-season 15s competition. That will go on for four weeks. The eight clubs have been placed into two pools, four teams in each and games will be played over three weekends with the finals on the fourth weekend.”
Flowing the 15s trail matches the CRU will stage the Hiri Cup, the competition involves the premier division’s best players into four teams named after the Hiri trade winds — Lahara, Mirigini, Avurigo and Laurabada.
From these sides the top players will be selected into the Boromas and Gaigais teams.
Joseph stated that the capitals top players will have a chance to play representative rugby after missing out last year because of the PNGRFU leadership dispute.
“We are set on ensuring that our representative sides, the Boromas and Gaigise, are prepared so we are starting early with players being identified for the Hiri Cup teams during the CRU pre-season 15s matches,” Joseph said.
“We have already commenced dialogue with Morobe Rugby to have a series of games against the Hammerheads in preparation for any provincial tournament that is organised later in the year,” Joseph said.
