Federations happy with HP workshop

SIXTY participants from various national federations attended High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea’s Champions Workshop in Port Moresby last Saturday.
The workshop provided the national federation executives and coaches the opportunity to speak directly to the staff and management of HPS PNG to better understand the types of services provided.
Long-time boxing administrator Dick Larry described the workshop as a great concept, adding it was encouraging to know that federations could be helped to develop their athletes.
Larry raised concerns about finding access to these programmes and services in regional areas where talents scouted regionally could be housed, trained and monitored.
Former Paralympian and PNG’s first Paralympic silver medallist Francis Kompaon, pictured, said it was good for national federations to meet the HP PNG team because many of these coaches, team and administrators did not know what kind of services were provided by HPS PNG.
“There are services out there that federations can engage but they can’t do it because of the cost but at HP these same services are provided free of charge,” Kompaon said.
“So the Champions Workshop was a good opportunity for federations to come and see but also know what is provided for them by the Government,” Kompaon said.
Codes that attended the workshop were: softball, lawn bowls, swimming, shooting, boxing, parasports, golf, basketball, karate, netball, sailing, archery, shooting, bodybuilding, weightlifting, powerlifting, canoeing, cricket, handball, hockey, rugby union (sevens), judo, university sport, badminton, table tennis, touch football, volleyball, and rugby league.
The next Champions Workshop will be in early May in Port Moresby and in Lae, with the invitation extended to national team athletes, their coaches and managers.
