CRU to develop women’s rugby

THE Capital Rugby Union (CRU) is determined to develop women’s rugby in Papua New Guinea following the successful hosting of the Cassowaries’ test match in Port Moresby.
CRU official Paul Joseph told The National that the competition was looking into ways to attract and develop women in the sport.
“CRU is still looking at avenues to attract and promote gender equality. It is looking at introducing rugby for schoolgirls which is long overdue,” he said. “Following the test between our women and Tonga, there is a greater need to establish this pathway for future Palais (sevens) and Cassowaries (15s) players.
“We only have six of the eight clubs competing in the women’s division. We have Moni Plus Nova, Credit Corporation Harlequins, Gangloff Consulting University, Wanderers, LCR Juggernauts and Kramer Ausenco Sisters while Crusaders and Valley Hunters are being encouraged to field women’s teams.”
Meanwhile, Joseph said the pre-season would see all divisions participating except the A-grade and the premier division will field combined sides along with the women’s teams.
The majority of players in the Cassowaries squad are from CRU. However, a drop in numbers saw the women’s division play a 10-a-side format alongside the men’s 15s competition last year.
