CORRECTIONAL Service will be putting more effort into its rehabilitation programme in 2019, says Acting Commissioner Steven Pokanis.
Prisoners’ rehabilitation is one of the major areas for implementation in 2019, as per the CS senior managers’ conference last year.
Pokanis said the programme aimed to provide rehabilitation and reintegration programmes through provision of education, life skills, agriculture and vocational training focused on transforming detainees into better citizens.
The first selected prison is Bomana outside Port Moresby.
Pokanis said the key to the success in CS hinged on implementing what its senior management team and commanding officers had agreed upon.
“I am grateful to our Government for the commitment and support to Correctional Service,” he said.
“The allocation of funds to Correctional Service for 2019 is truly unprecedented.”
Pokanis said disseminating these priorities down to operational level, identifying right officers, utilising low-risk detainees and maximising every basic resources available would lead to success in 2019.
He said commanding officers had the huge task of managing officers and detainees, ensuring their well-being and maintaining constant supervision of their respective jails.
