CS plans programme to release sick, old

THE Correctional Services Department will push forward a parole programme to allow the release of inmates who have reached 50, are sick or are deemed “safe” to be back in their communities.
Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis told inmates at Bomana Prison in Port Moresby yesterday during a dedication service that most of them deserved to be released back to their families.
“Sick prisoners must be close to their families,” he said.
“Those (who have reached) 50 must go home.
“There are many good prisoners here who should be (released) on parole.”
Prisoners will have to apply through the parole board.
It applies only to convicted prisoners. Those on remand will have to wait for their court case.
“Prisoners must understand that applying for parole should not give them hope that they will be out,” Pokanis said.
“It will have to go through processes first.” A sick inmate would have to submit medical reports from three doctors.
“(When) we visited Goroka prison last week, many prisoners did not understand the procedure, thinking that when they file an application, it indicates that they will be released,” Pokanis said.
“The final decision will be made by the board.” Victims of their crimes must also be consulted before they are released because they can turn around and attack them, he said.
