THE correctional services (CS) has sponsored 11 inmates at Baisu jail in Western highlands to attend technical vocational education training (Tvet) as part of the department’s rehabilitation programme.
The CS made available a cheque of K3,600 towards the Baisu jail Tvet centre in Mt Hagen to enroll these inmates so they can attend courses while serving their term.
Ten males and a female inmate benefited from this sponsorship package.
The fees were presented to Baisu Tvet chairman Fr Robert Nolie and centre manager Christopher Wani by Baisu jail commander Chief Supt Ranson Tiki on Tuesday.
Fr Nolie said these 11 inmates were among 70 students who enrolled this year.
Last year the CS also paid the same amount for 11 students.
He said Baisu Tvet offered carpentry, light motor mechanic, tourism and hospitality and business studies courses.
He said these were skills inmates would be earning while serving their jail term.
“For the inmates this is an opportunity for them to gain skills and knowledge and use them to start a new life after completing their jail term.
“They will use the skills and knowledge and look for job because the trainings earned will encouraged them to change their past,” Fr Nolie said.
He said Baisu Tvet was doing its best to help in providing training and giving a second chance in life.
Nolie said Baisu Tvet was located inside the jail compound, aiming at rehabilitating prisoners.
