SENIOR Correctional Services officers from Barawagi jail in the Kerowagi district of Chimbu put in a commendable effort in recovering an automatic rifle lost in a traffic accident over the weekend, jail commander Superintendent Michael Avirap said yesterday.
He also confirmed protection of a hired-vehicle by locals at the Koronigle section of the Highlands Highway.
“I thank the Danga family, of Koronigle village who cared for the four Correctional officers and two of their daughters injured in an accident and care for the vehicle and return of the rifle,” Avirap said.
He also thanked Correctional officers Sergeants Maima Kawagle, David Maima, and Bal Michael and others including police Sergeant James Dad, from Kerowagi.
“These officers played pivotal role in the recovery of the AR15 automatic rifle that some youths took from the vehicle during the accident.
He said the four Correctional Services warders from Baisu jail outside Mt Hagen city in Western Highlands had escorted prisoners to Bihute jail outside Goroka in Eastern Highlands.
They were returning after transporting the prisoners to Bihute when they were involved in an accident at the Koronigle Bridge.
It was reported in May last year that the Barawagi Prison, designed to cater for two hundred prisoners, now holds more than 400.
Avirap told The National, at the time that the prison was holding more inmates than it is supposed to and needs assistance to cater for the large number of prisoners.
