Cultural heritage is not our strength

I WRITE in support of an article titled “Review Pledge” (Oct 1).

As our national pledge goes, I believe in this present time, our cultural heritage is not the source of our “strength” but the source of our “identity” as a unique nation in the world.

Our only source of strength should be God alone since our country has been dedicated to God by Sir Michael Somare.

How can we claim to be a Christian country, pledge our culture to be the source of our strength and then ask God to bless our country at the end of the pledge?

Imagine everyday throughout the country, the pledge being recited in schools and at national events and ceremonies.

Can this possibly be one of the reasons why the country is facing so many problems: because we left God out of our national pledge?

Better still, we should select the right words to describe the influence that Christianity and culture has had on our people and country.

Therefore, I strongly support and would like to call upon our lawmakers to review our pledge.
