PAPUA New Guinea’s diverse cultures and traditions will become extinct if nothing is done to preserve them, a public servant says.
Southern Highlands Department of Commerce, Culture and Tourism adviser Charles Towang said while the older generation who lived in the villages were holding onto traditional beliefs and practices, they would eventually die with them if steps were not taken to record and preserve them.
He said more people in rural areas were drifting to modern practices and ways of doing things and leaving behind their traditional knowledge and norms.
He said hosting of festivals and cultural shows around the country was vital to keep cultures and traditions alive.
