THE prestigious Digicel Cup will be not replaced with a new one after five years of existence in the competition.
This was confirmed by Digicel PNG senior vice-president and marketing manager Lorna McPherson during a press conference witnessed by Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chief executive Reatau Rau and PNG National Rugby League Competition manager Stanley Hondina at the National Football Stadium on Wednesday.
“We have no intension to replace the Cup as this marks our contribution to the winners of the semi-professional competition.
“As naming-rights sponsors, we are proud of what we have achieved in the development of rugby league since we came on board to partner PNGNRLC and PNGRFL.
“We are proud to see that the game is brought to the grassroots level as witnessed this year with a good season.”
Rau said: “We are proud of our achievements since the change of the brand. We are going from strength to strength. This reflects the passion that our players and people have for the game.”
Meanwhile, Hondina has warned that violence at Sunday’s grand final between the Lae Tigers and the Hela Wigmen will not be tolerated.
“We want everyone to enjoy the game as a family and community-oriented activity,” he said ahead of the National Football Stadium showdown.
Hondina said live bands would add spice to the final to entertain the crowd.
He said the presentation of awards would be done straight after the final.
