THE national coffee cupping competition is a way of demonstrating different varieties of coffee production to the world, says Coffee Industry Corporation chief executive officer Charles Dambui.
Dambui addressed coffee farmers and producers in Port Moresby on Friday during the closing of the national coffee cupping competition.
“The coffee cupping competition was basically to link farmers directly to the market.
“The world market is sending out positive signals, and it is important our focus and attention must be responsive to these market signals, and be responsive to market opportunities.”
Dambui said many farmers depended on coffee to earn an income, thus it was important to make the industry relevant “not by an act of parliament but by the demand of the people”.
“Make it more vibrant, competitive and sustainable,” he said.
Agriculture and Livestock Minister Benny Allen said local farmers had been producing coffee but market sources had been an issue.
