A LOGGING ship that travelled from China was ordered to stop outside of Madang town by Customs officers because it was in breach of PNG laws.
Customs officer Anthony Brabar said the ship was ordered to anchor in the sea near the town for authorities to check and clear the ship, crew and cargo.
He said police and Customs officers yesterday boarded the ship and searched it, confiscating cigarettes worth more than K5,000.
According to a local living at Kranget Island, the ship was travelling at speed on Sunday afternoon when it sailed passed the island.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang thanked his officers for working with the Customs officers.
He said police personnel would be available to assist Customs officials stop and search vessels that might be carrying illegal items.
