Customs trains brokers on new automated data system

The PNG Customs agency is focused on training users of the new automated system for customs data (Asycuda) to increase efficiency, improve revenue collection and control through a computerised system.
Asycuda project manager John Nakiria was speaking yesterday at a training event in Lae for customs brokers from Lae and the Highlands region.
Nakiria said the training was to get the brokers to know how to use the upgraded system to avoid delays and penalties during errors and omissions.
“The customs brokers, the shippers and the customs officers are our partners, so we want them to understand what they do and why they do what they do,” Nakiria said.
He said the new data system can help sustain economic growth and improve trade competitiveness.
“We want all our partners to be able to use asycuda correctly in cargo clearance and payment of taxes,” Nakiria said.
He said there are still challenges in place.
“Our partners must understand that training is not a guarantee for granting of access to Asycuda,” Nakiria said. He said Asycuda is a tool for facilitating trade and accounting of revenue in compliance with set procedures and legal requirements.
Lae was the first port to launch the system and the training is the third since the launch of Asycuda.
Asycuda is fully funded by the national Government and is expected to be delivered in three phases over a 24-month period.
