Cyber security faces challenge

HACKING attacks have increased exponentially due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to Deloitte PNG.
Deloitte PNG information technology and cyber security specialist Alberto Cimas said they were working with 10 companies to devise strategies on how to facilitate employees working from home.
“Some of them are well-known companies in PNG,” Cimas said.
“We have helped a number of companies recover from hacking attacks.
“We are also helping other companies to prevent the attacks from happening.”
Cimas also said there was an increase in hacking cases in Europe.
Given that most workers are now working from home, he said hackers had two advantages:

  • systems used to work from home open a door for hackers to enter companies virtual private network (VPN) connections, team-viewer, remote desktop connections; and,
  • Systems are unattended, making it easier for hackers to act freely.

“I have informed most of my clients in PNG of this situation so that they can implement appropriate defensive or offensive cyber security strategies, if necessary,” Cimas said.
“At Deloitte PNG, we have the capacity, the tools and the knowledge in-country to provide specialised services around this.
“In fact, we are already helping some clients in Port Moresby implementing cyber strategies.”
