A 36-YEAR-OLD man charged with assaulting a teacher who allegedly hit his daughter was fined K500 by the Lae District Court on Friday.
Magistrate Pious Tapil said there was a process to resolve issues when imposing the fine on Moses Sawi of Monakasut, Nawaeb, Morobe.
He told Sawi that failure to pay the fine would see him serve a five-month prison term.
Magistrate Tapil told Sawi that his daughter had been slapped by her teacher in the school and the matter should have been reported to the school management or the police to deal with.
“There are processes and procedures to follow, but you’ve taken the matter into your own hands which is why you are in court today,” Tapil told Sawi.
Sawi and several others were alleged to have assaulted the teacher on May 5 at 4-Mile Primary School after he was told that his daughter had been assaulted by the teacher.
The court noted that when the teacher stepped out of the classroom, one of the men punched him in the face and swung a bush knife at him.
Sawi and others then punched the teacher and he fell to the ground.
Another teacher tried to stop the fight but was also attacked and sustained serious injuries.
