A MAN has been arrested by police after trying to smuggle marijuana in his shoe in Madang.
According to local police the betel nut buyer was searched at a checkpoint at Talidig, North Coast road after he was observed acting suspiciously.
The suspect was travelling into Bogia from Goroka, Eastern Highlands when he was caught on Friday.
The officers conducting the road check on Friday noticed the man was uneasy and stopped him suspecting he had something to hide.
They took him to Talidig station where he was searched and a small amount of marijuana was discovered neatly packed inside his shoe.
Provincial police commander acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang said numerous killings in the province had been committed by individuals under the influence of drugs.
Earlier this year, police reported a baby killed by an addict at the Banana Block.
Rubiang noted that there were too many mentally unstable people on the streets and drugs such as marijuana only made their condition worse.
He thanked his men at Talidig and added that Madang lacked police dogs to help detect drug smuggling activities in the province.
