THE annual Oil Search Daffodil Corporate Golf Challenge was launched by major sponsor Oil Search Limited and the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation (PNGCF) on Monday.
The Daffodil Corporate Golf Challenge is one of the longest running golf charities in Port Moresby, having been established in 2003 with the aim of raising funds for the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society.
In 2014, the charity golf cup changed its focus to raise funds for the PNG Cancer Foundation to carry out education and awareness programmes for cancer prevention.
Oil Search PNG country chairman Gerea Aopi and PNG Cancer Foundation CEO Dadi Toka Jr launched the annual charity and also unveiled the new trophy.
“As a proud Papua New Guinea Company, Oil Search is pleased to be partnering with the PNG Cancer Foundation to create more awareness among our people about the dangers of cancer”, Aopi said.
“This year marks the 16th consecutive year that we are backing the Daffodil Corporate Challenge with a sponsorship of K25,000 and continue to actively participated in the fight against cancer.”
Oil Search sponsored the charity event previously with the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society and now back to the PNG Cancer Foundation.
“Our continuous investment in organisations such as PNG Cancer Foundation allows us to extend our reach through partnerships and to leverage their local expertise and knowledge so we can make greater progress towards reducing the risk of cancer.
“I would also like thank the Port Moresby business community for their continued support which has contributed to the success of this event, either through registering teams to participate, sponsorship of prizes and cash donations,” Aopi said.
Dadi Toka Jr thanked Aopi for being actively involved in the work of PNGCF and extended his gratitude to Oil Search for its continuous support towards the fight against cancer.
The partnership with Oil Search has assisted PNGCF to reach out to more than 6000 individuals in PNG with awareness on cancer prevention since 2003.
“All funds raised from the Daffodil Corporate Golf Challenge will go towards bringing cancer education and awareness programs to various communities and schools throughout PNG in 2019.”
The charity event also falls within the PNGCF Daffodil Campaign Month throughout August.
The Daffodil month is aimed at providing hope for a healthier nation by encouraging Papua New Guineans to challenge themselves to reduce their risk of cancer by making healthy lifestyle choices.
“Start the conversation about cancer prevention today. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and protect your family from developing cancer in the future. Don’t smoke, don’t chew betel nut and reduce your alcohol intake,” Toka added.
The 2018 Daffodil Corporate Golf Challenge tees off on Friday, Aug 24 at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club.
