PEOPLE in Daru are celebrating the re-opening of the trestle wharf which had been closed for almost six years.

Work at the wharf took about three months to complete and cost more than K10 million.

It was funded by the PNG Sustainable Development Programme, PNG Ports and Curtain Brothers. Samm Wambi, the principal of Daru Secondary School, said the re-opening of the wharf was a big relief for Daru people. He said they had to wait for weeks for goods to be transported to Daru.

“We struggle to get good services,” he said.

Wambi said unemployment was also an issue they faced but it would now be helped with the opening of the new wharf.

“Unemployment is one major concern for us but with the new wharf we can now have a lot of youths employed,” he said.

PNGSDP chief executive officer David Sode told the people that PNGSDP belonged to the people of Daru and all its funds were for Western.

He said when the OK Tedi mine ceased operations, the people of Western Province should still have enough funds to sustain themselves.

He said the K1.4 billion saved in Singapore by PNGSDP for 10 years was for the people of the province.
