AN exhibition on the “safe cities for women and girls programme” opened at the Vision City shopping mall in the capital last Thursday.

The programme was a joint initiative of the National Capital District Commission and United Nations Women and was aimed at increasing the levels of safety for women and girls in cities.

“The purpose of the project is to create a safer city by reducing violence and empowering women in market places through increased capacity of duty bearers to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls, increased respect among market users, enhanced infrastructure, management and operational measures in the market that prevented this violence, and increased capacity of the media to report on incidences against women and girls,” UNAIDS said in statement.

The exhibit combined information stalls from partners disseminating information on service provision, a display of photos from PNG’s markets and the launching of a documentary.
