FORTY prisoners from Daru jail in Western are preparing to be transferred to Bomana in Port Moresby after the Western health authority condemned the prison.
Two prisoners with four Daru-based warders including jail commander Insp Lena Hakuri, arrived in the capital on Sunday.
Insp Hakuri said there were 53 prisoners at the Daru jail and 13 would be released on parole, with 40 transferred to Bomana when airline services returned to normal. However, they will be taken in pairs.
“These two prisoners are the first to come and the rest will come later,” he said.
Insp Hakuri said prisoners would come in pairs as Air Niugini would not allow all of them to come on one flight because of the coronavirus risk.
“They will be coming on 20 flights,” he said.
“After all the prisoners have vacated the jail, renovation and maintenance work will be done.”
Insp Hakuri said the South Fly district had allocated K818,000 to do renovations to the jail as required by the health authority.
