A MAJOR landslide at the Daulo Pass section of the Highlands Highway in Eastern Highlands on Monday evening has cut off traffic movement.
The landslide occurred between 6.30pm and 7pm as a result of the prolonged rainy period.
Travellers going to Goroka, Kainantu, Madang and Lae were left stranded on the western end. Those going to Chimbu, Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Enga and Southern Highlands were stranded in Goroka.
Reports from the area said villagers had created a narrow passage enough for four-wheel-drive vehicles to pass through. Later that morning, heavy earthmoving equipment arrived on site to clear away the debris.
Eastern Highlands provincial police commander Augustine Wampe confirmed police were at the site monitoring the situation.
He said the section was cleared yesterday bringing the situation back to normal.
“Police are on site to monitor the travelling public to avoid unnecessary disruptions and harassment to passengers and motorists,” Wampe said.
