Davies was a true scientist

Letters

THE passing of Professor Hugh Davies is a huge loss to the University of Papua New Guinea Geological and Earth Sciences strand, Department of Mining and the Government of Papua New Guinea.
Davies’ most productive years were spent in Papua New Guinea, from the colonial period through to Independence up to now until his demise this month.
We are indebted to his great wealth of knowledge and skills that had been passed onto young Papua New Guineans who had set foot at UPNG over the years, especially in the fields of geology and earth sciences under Davies’ mentorship.
Often referred to as the last frontier, PNG’s structural and geological composition was exposed through the work of the likes of Davies.
The geological and potential mining data and information which formed the basis of our immense value in the extractive industries as government data was made possible over the years by his involvement.
We have and now stand ready to showcase our mining and petroleum sites to attract investors. This was because of the valuable input of Prof Davies, who undertook costly and painstaking exercises in his academic pursuit for student learning.
While doing so, Davies uncovered and provided useful information documented for our benefit in years to come.
We salute you and thank you for your efforts, Professor!
May your soul find its rightful place in the heavenly realms.
