AN agreement between the Divine Word University’s medicine and health science faculty and Morobe health authority in Lae yesterday will enable final-year students to undergo practical training.
The signing of the agreement will see final-year students comple their prescribed hours of clinical work (clinical placements) at the Angau hospital during their study.
Dean of the faculty Dr Clement Manineng said the signing marked the relationship between the provincial health authority and the university to develop the next level of health professionals for the country in the future.
“Through this agreement we can better address the deteriorating health indicators that we are experiencing at hand now in the country,” Dr Manineng said.
He said the agreement would see the first 10 fifth-year degree programme students attending clinical placements at Angau hospital in the next few weeks.
“These students will undergo various training in their respective disciplines and the number of students will increase in the future,” he added.
Morobe health authority chairman David Wissink said from the authority’s perspective, the agreement was a milestone.
Wissink said through the arrangement, there would be more staff recruited through the partnership.
“There has been the need for more staff to be recruited into Angau and with this programme now, we would be able to scout quality staff to work in Angau and other health posts in the province,” Wissink said.
He said there were times that the authority experienced shortage of staff and through the signed agreements, it would help a lot in the area.

  • We also need a new breed of christian workers. Good deal to pave the path for a reliable and functional health system.
