PNG Power Ltd and Customs PNG are negotiating the drafting of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to regulate electrical and electronic appliances imported into the country.
PNG Power regulatory services manager James Kale said the quality of some products brought into the country posed a threat to safety and degraded the industry.
“The MoU will establish guidelines and set out the obligations for PNG Power and Customs to carry out the inspections and other functions,” he said.
“It is expected to come into effect at the end of the year.
“This would be the platform where we can team up for the prevention of the entry of sub-standard electrical or electronic products.”
Kale said the challenge was that they were operating out of Port Moresby and were trying to reach out to make sure customers knew what appliances they were buying.
